You Shall Drink of the Cup and Be Baptized - Mark 10:39

Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples James and John came to Him saying, “Master, we would that you should do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would you that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on your right hand, and the other on your left hand, in your glory. But Jesus said unto them, You know not what you ask: can you drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus told James and John, “you shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of” where we read:

And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall you be baptized:

The verse reads, “And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; Mark began with the words, “And they said unto him” which means “and James and John uttered, declared, proclaimed and answered Jesus”, “we can” or “we James and John are capable and have the ability”. “And Jesus said unto them” or “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate uttered, declared and proclaimed to James and John”, “you shall indeed drink of the cup” which means “you James and John will even so and also imbibe and taste of the drinking vessel” “that I drink of” or “that Jesus imbibes from”. Mark shared how Jesus told “James and John” they would “imbibe” from the same “drinking vessel” as He did after they stated they were capable to do so.

The verse continues, and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall you be baptized:” Mark added the words, “and with the baptism” which means “and with the immersion and submersion” “that I am baptized withal” or “that Jesus was to be immersed and submersed within” “shall you be baptized” which means “would James and John be immersed and submerged”. Mark shared how Jesus told “James and John” they would be “immersed” in the same “immersion” that He would endure.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how James and John believed themselves to be capable of going through the same “tribulation and trial” as Jesus. Jesus would suffer “torture and punishment” as well as death for being who He is. God the Father so loves people that He sent His Son Jesus to suffer affliction and death for the “sins” which separated them from God. James and John did eventually suffer affliction and James died for His faith in Jesus, but they really had no understanding as to what they were confirming at the time. People who receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” may suffer tribulation and possible death, but they may be assured that Jesus has overcome the world so they need not be afraid. (See John 16:33)

Next time Mark shares how Jesus further stated, “to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
