What Did Moses Command about Divorce? - Mark 10:3

Mark wrote how, “the Pharisees came to him, and asked” Jesus “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him”, and in chapter ten and verse three of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked, “what did Moses command you?” where we read:

And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

The verse reads, “And he answered and said unto them, ... Mark began with the words, “and he answered” which means “and Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which refers to “the Pharisees”. Mark shared how Jesus began to answer the question of the Pharisees concerning a man “divorcing” his wife.

The verse continues, ... What did Moses command you?” Mark added the words, “what did Moses” which means “what withal did Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion” “command you” or “charge, enjoin and order the Pharisees”? Mark shared how Jesus answered the “Pharisees” question with a question concerning what “Moses” their “law giver” commanded them to do.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we discover the wisdom and insight within Jesus. He is the Son of God, and regardless of how “crafty and brilliant” the “Pharisees” thought they were, Jesus was able to outsmart them. Jesus turned their attention toward what they knew in the “law” concerning divorce because “Pharisees” were known to “keep” the law of God. God knows all things, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus that allows Him to be the “Savior and Lord” of their lives. As “Lord”, He directs their path, and when they obey, He will lead them in paths of “righteousness” according to what He has to say about things – including marriage. Those who are wise will carefully attend to Jesus' words to the “Pharisees” and hearken to and obey everything He has to say.

Next time Mark shares how the Pharisees answered, “Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
