Disciples Did Not Understand - Mark 9:32

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “departed from there, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-two of his book, Mark shared how Jesus' disciples,“understood not that saying” where we read:

But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

The verse reads, “But they understood not that saying, ... Mark began with the words, “but they understood not” which means “however, nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and Jesus' disciples did not comprehend and were ignorant of” “that saying” or “the utterance, declaration and proclamation of Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples were “ignorant” of Jesus' words concerning His betrayal, death and resurrection.

The verse goes on to say, “... and were afraid to ask him. Mark continued with the words, “and were afraid” which means “and Jesus' disciples were struck with fear, seized with alarm and hesitated” “to ask him” or “to inquire of and question Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples “hesitated” to ask Jesus what He meant by what He said.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we notice the “fear” and “hesitation” within Jesus' disciples to ask Him what He meant by His “betrayal, death and resurrection”. They did not “understand” what He was saying because it seemed so contrary to their idea of what Jesus was going to do. God had His plan, and He demonstrated His willingness to “save” people through His Son Jesus. Those who desire to learn about Jesus will find His “betrayal, death and resurrection” was for their “salvation”, and when they “believe and trust” in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall begin a relationship with Him that allows them to “come boldly before His throne of grace” with anything they want to ask Him. (See Hebrews 4:16)

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “what was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
