Mark wrote how Jesus said, “if your hand offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. And if your foot offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. And if your eye offend you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-eight of his book, Mark shared how Jesus repeated for the third time these words, “where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched” where we read:
Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.
The verse reads, “Where their worm dies not, ...” Mark began with Jesus' words, “where their worm” which means “wither and in what place those who are in hell's grubs, maggots or earthworms who prey upon dead bodies” “dies not” or “do not expire, finish or stop being deceased”. Mark shared how Jesus referred for the third time that people who go to “hell” will never experience the ceasing of the body preying “worms”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the fire is not quenched.” Mark continued with the words, “and the fire” which means “and the burning fiery fire” “is not quenched” or “is not extinguished, suppressed or stifled”. Mark shared how Jesus for the third time repeated that the “fiery fires” of “hell” never end.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we should pay particular attention to this third warning from Jesus about this place called “hell”. Jesus spoke more about “hell” than anyone else in the Bible, yet His desire is to “save” people from going there. People who adamantly “keep” their “offensive” things reject and refuse to allow Jesus to forgive and cleanse them from their “sinful ways”. In effect, they choose not to have a personal relationship with God will be “cast into hell where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched”. Everyone who read these words should consider them carefully, turn from their “offensive ways” and receive Jesus. Rather than be “cast into hell”, may they yield to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” before their eternal doom is realized.
