Never Dying Worm and Unquenched Fire - Mark 9:44

Mark wrote how Jesus said, “whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. And if your hand offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched” where we read:

Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.

The verse reads, “Where their worm dies not, ... Mark began with the words, “where their worm” which means “wither and in what place those who are in hell's grubs, maggots or earthworms who prey upon dead bodies” “dies not” or “do not expire, finish or stop being deceased”. Mark shared how Jesus said people who go to “hell” will never experience the ceasing of the body preying “worms”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and the fire is not quenched. Mark continued with the words, “and the fire” which means “and the burning fiery fire” “is not quenched” or “is not extinguished, suppressed or stifled”. Mark shared how the “fiery fires” of “hell” never stop as well.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we discover how horrible “hell” will be. According to Jesus, there will be “worms” that never “die” and the “fire” that burns there never goes out. Jesus spoke more about “hell” than any other person in the Bible, and the reason He came to the earth is to “save” people from such a atrocious place. Second Peter chapter Three and verse nine says, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God wants every person to be with Him forever, and by believing in His Son Jesus' sacrifice for their “sins”, they will receive “everlasting life” with Him. Those who refuse and reject Jesus will suffer the eternal punishment Jesus spoke of known as “hell”, and woe be to those who enter there.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “if your foot offend you, cut it off”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
