A Voice Out of the Cloud - Luke 9:35

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. While he thus spoke, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how, “there came a voice out of the cloud” where we read:

And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

The verse reads, “And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, ... Luke began with the words, “and there came a voice” or “and there arose and appeared a sound and tone of uttered words” “out of the cloud” which means “from the cloud that surrounded Jesus and His disciples”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how “a voice” sounded out from the midst of the “cloud” and proclaimed the following words.

The verse continues, “... This is my beloved Son: hear him.” Luke added the words, “this is my beloved Son” which means “this, Jesus, is God the Father's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love progeny and posterity”: “hear him” or “attend to, understand, perceive and consider Jesus”. Luke shared how the “voice”, which was God the Father's, from the “cloud” declared Jesus to be “His well- loved and esteemed Son” whom God said people were to “attend to and understand”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “voice” of God the Father came from the “cloud” upon the mountain and spoke concerning His Son Jesus. Jesus complied with His Father, and now that He was going to obey the instructions concerning His death. There was no need to have “three tabernacles” erected as Peter suggested because God declared Jesus as His “beloved Son”, and His command to “hear” Jesus should be the aim and direction of all who consider Him.

Next time Luke shares, “when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
