Eat What is Set Before You Luke 10:8

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house”, and in chapter ten and verse eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “eat such things as are set before you” where we read:

And into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:

The verse reads, “And into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you, ... Luke began with the words, “and into whatsoever city you enter” or “and within whatever town, village or dwelling place Jesus' disciples come into or make entrance within”, “and they receive you” which means “and the people within the city accept, approve and do not reject Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus began to give instructions to His disciples when they go into a “city” and the people “accept and approve” them.

The verse continues, “eat such things as are set before you:” Luke added the words, “eat such things” which means “consume and devour whatever foods” “as are set before you” or “that are placed and committed to Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His “seventy disciples” to “consume” whatever foods are placed before them.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus instructed His disciples when they “make entrance” into a “city”, and the people within it “accept and approve of” them, the disciples were to “consume” whatever food the people of the city put before them. In other words, Jesus' disciples were not to set the menu. Ministers are not to decide what people should be feeding them nor are they to decide what they are to “drink”. The idea is to appreciate whatever the people choose and never take advantage of people to whom they are ministering. This may be challenging at times because those who have traveled throughout the world to minister the gospel of Jesus may have “different kinds of foods” set before them. God's gospel, provided through His Son Jesus, is to be made available to everyone “without charge”, and the grace of Jesus Christ was never to be abused by setting meal menus. Let all who read these words receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” and never set menus as to what they should eat.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples to, “heal the sick … and say … The Kingdom of God is come near unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
