Hearing Jesus - Luke 10:16

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be you sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, shall be thrust down to hell”, and in chapter ten and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “he that hears you hears me” where we read:

He that hears you hears me; and he that despises you despises me; and he that despises me despises him that sent me.

The verse reads, “He that hears you hears me; Luke began with the words, “he that hears you” or “the person whether male or female who is endowed with the faculty of hearing, attends to and considers Jesus' disciples” “hears me” which means “is endowed with the faculty of hearing, attends to and considers Jesus Himself”. Luke shared how Jesus said people who “attend to” His disciples' words also “attend” to” Him.

The verse continues, “and he that despises you despises me; and he that despises me despises him that sent me” Luke added the words, “and he that despises you” which means “and the person whether male or female who does away with, sets aside and disregards Jesus' disciples” “despises me” or “does away with, sets aside and disregards Jesus Himself”; “and the that despises me” which means “and the person who does away with, sets aside and disregards Jesus” “despises him that sent me” or “does away with, sets aside and disregards the One who dispatched Jesus which is God”. Luke shared how Jesus declared the person who “disregards” His disciples actually “disregards” Him, and when they “disregard” Him, they are actually “disregarding” God who “sent” Him.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus said there is a direct correlation to people who “hear” His disciples and “hearing” Him. Those who “hear” Jesus' disciples, “hear Him”, and those who do not “hear” Jesus' disciples have “disregarded” Him and His Heavenly Father God. God the Father desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and His “gospel” is proclaimed by His “disciples”. People who “receive” the word of Jesus' disciples, “receive” Him, and those who do not will have both Jesus and His Heavenly Father with whom to give an account.

Next time Luke shares how, “the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject to us”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
