Things Hidden from the Wise and Prudent - Luke 10:21

The beloved physician Luke shares how Jesus said to His disciples, “I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent” where we read:

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight.

The verse reads, “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, ...” Luke began with the words, “in that hour” or “in that definite point of time and moment” “Jesus rejoiced in spirit” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation exulted and was exceedingly glad within His essence which was devoid of all or at least all grosser matter and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I thank you” which means “I, Jesus, celebrate and acknowledge you, God, openly and joyfully”, “O Father” or “O progenitor, originator and transmitter who is God”, “Lord of heaven and earth” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah pertaining to the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings and the arable land, country, land and territory”, “that you have hid these things” or “that God the Father has concealed and kept secret of God giving power to disciples through His Son Jesus” “from the wise” which means “away and separate from the skilled, expert, cultivated and learned” “and prudent” or “and intelligent, having understanding and sagacious”. Luke shared how Jesus was exceedingly glad within His “spirit” as He gave “thanks” to His Father in heaven because God “kept secret” the things shown openly to His disciples from people who were “skilled and intelligent”.

The verse continues, “... and have revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight.” Luke added the words, “and have revealed them” which means “and exposed, uncovered, disclosed and made bare the things shown to His disciples” “unto babes” or “to infants, little children or the untaught and unskilled”: “even so” which means “for verily, truly and assuredly”, “Father” or “progenitor, originator and transmitter who is God”, “for it seemed good” which means “because, since and on account that it arose, appeared and came upon the stage good will, kindly intent, benevolence, pleasure and satisfaction” “in your sight” or “within the presence and in front of God the Father”. Luke shared how Jesus continued His thanks to His Father God because God exposed these “secret things” to “the unskilled and untaught” because it was pleasurable and satisfying for God to do so.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to thank His Father God for keeping the principles of His Kingdom from people who are skilled and exposed them to people who are unskilled. People who are “wise and prudent” in this world are not necessarily the same in the Kingdom of God. Jesus took great delight in God's purpose to design things this way, and when a person believes themselves to be “intelligent and skilled”, they often see no need for a relationship with God. God desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus, and when they humble themselves before Him, He will save them from their sins, fill them with His Spirit and expose them to the secrets of His Kingdom. Self-sufficiency has no place in God's Kingdom regardless of how “intelligent and skilled” a person may be.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “all things are delivered to me of my Father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
