Lord Teach Us to Pray - Luke 11:1

Luke the beloved physician shared concerning Jesus and His disciples, “it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”, and in chapter eleven and verse one of his book Luke shared how one of Jesus' disciples said, “Lord, teach us to pray” where we read:

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

The verse reads, “And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence”, “that, as he was praying” which means “that while Jesus was making orations, supplicating and worshiping His Father God” “in a certain place” or “within a particular location”. Luke shared how Jesus was “worshiping and making orations” to His Father God in a particular location.

The verse continues, “... when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” Luke added the words, “when he ceased” or “at the time and moment Jesus stopped, desisted and restrained from praying”, “one of his disciples said unto him” or “a particular and certain one of Jesus' students, pupils and attendants uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus”, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “teach us to pray” or “instruct, hold didactic discourses, instill doctrine and impart instruction to Jesus' disciples to make orations, worship and supplicate”, “as John” which means “in the same manner and likeness that John the Baptist whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver” “also taught his disciples” which means “even so and indeed instructed, held didactic discourses, instilled doctrine and imparted instruction to his, John's, students, pupils and attendants”. Luke shared how Jesus stopped praying, and one particular “disciple” asked Him to instruct them to “pray” like John the Baptist “instructed” his “disciples”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the disciples desired to “pray” like Jesus. There was something about the way Jesus prayed that made them desire to “pray” as He did. Jesus' disciples knew John the Baptist taught his disciples to “pray”, so one disciple of Jesus asked Him to teach them as well. God wants all people to “pray” to Him like Jesus did, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they align themselves with the One who knows the best way to “worship and make orations” to God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “When you pray, say, Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
