Jesus Rebuking an Unclean Spirit - Luke 9:42

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech you, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it tears him that he foams again, and bruising him hardly departs from him. And I besought your disciples to cast him out; and they could not. And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring your son hither”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus “rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child” where we read:

And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him.

And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

The verse reads, “And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. Luke began with the words, “and as he was yet a coming” or “and during the time when the man was approaching Jesus with his son”, “the devil” which means “the evil and wicked spirit, demon and messenger or minister of the devil” “threw him down” or “tore, distorted and convulsed the boy in an epileptic fit”, “and tare him” which means “and rent and violently cast down the boy”. Luke shared when the man was bringing his son to Jesus, the “demon” within the boy began to “convulse” and “cast” him to the ground.

The verse goes on to say, “And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.” Luke continued with the words, “and Jesus” which means “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “rebuked the unclean spirit” or “chided, reproved, censured severely, admonished and charged the demon or evil essence”, “and healed the child” which means “and cured, restored to health and made the boy whole”, “and delivered him again” or “and restored the boy and gave him back” “to his father” which means “to the boy's immediate male progenitor and ancestor”. Luke shared how Jesus “chided and reproved” the “evil spirit” within the boy, cured him and returned him to his father.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “demon” reacted to the boy being brought to Jesus by “convulsing” him and “casting him down” again. At that point, Jesus overpowered the “evil spirit”, commanded him to come out of the boy, cured him and returned the boy to his father. Jesus again demonstrated that He was and is the “omnipotent Messiah”, and since He wants everyone to understand He has power to free them from their “sins” and grant to them everlasting life with His Father God, all they need is to believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how the people were, “all amazed at the mighty power of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
