Let These Sayings Sink Down into Your Ears - Luke 9:44

The beloved physician Luke wrote how people who saw Jesus rebuke the unclean spirit within a man's son, “were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, ...”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-four of his book Luke shared what those words were as Jesus said, “let these saying sink down into your ears” where we read:

Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

The verse reads, “Let these sayings sink down into your ears: Luke began with the words, “Let these sayings” or “allow and permit the uttering, declaring and proclamations that Jesus is about to say” “sink down into your ears” which means “be set in place, put, fixed and established within the people's physical ears for hearing”. Luke shared how Jesus directed His disciples to “listen carefully to and receive” the words He was going to speak to them.

The verse continues, “for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.” Luke added the words, “for the Son of man” which means “because the Son of God, Jesus” “shall be delivered” or “will be given up, condemned, committed and commended” “into the hands of men” which means “in the physical hands of male human beings”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples that He would be “given over” to men who would take Him into captivity.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to share with His disciples concerning His future on earth. Jesus was destined to be captured, tortured and die because He was to pay the penalty for the sins of all mankind. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words allow what Jesus said to “sink down into” their “ears” and believe what He has said and done.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples, “understood not this saying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
