Power to Tread on Serpents and Scorpions - Luke 10:19

The beloved physician Luke shares about Jesus' disciples, “the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through your name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven”, and in chapter ten and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells His disciples, “I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions” where we read:

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

The verse reads, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy:” Luke began with the word, “Behold” or “look, lo and consider”, “I give unto you” which means “I, Jesus, grant, supply and furnish you disciples” “power to tread upon serpents” or “liberty, ability, strength and authority to trample and crush with the feet snakes which were and emblem of cunning and wisdom” “and scorpions” which means “and scorpions which is the name of a little animal somewhat resembling a lobster which lurk in warm regions such as stone walls and have a poisonous sting in their tails”, “and over all the power” or “and against each, every, the whole and everyone of the strengths, abilities and resources” “of the enemy” which means “belonging to devil who is the most bitter foe of the divine government”. Luke shared how Jesus granted His disciples “power and authority” to “trample” “snakes, scorpions and demons”.

The verse continues, “and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke added the words, “and nothing” which means “and not one thing” “shall by any means” or “will in any manner” “hurt you” which means “harm, wrong or damage Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus told disciples “not one thing” would “wrong or harm” them.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus cared for His disciples. Not only did He give them “power and authority” over “physical” agents of harm such as “snakes and scorpions”, but He also granted them authority over “spiritual” beings such as “demons”. God loves people, and He wants to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When they yield their lives to Him, He will forgive their sins which separate them from Him and provide both “physical” and “spiritual” protection they need to function in this world.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
