Moses and Elijah with Jesus - Luke 9:30

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty of his book Luke shared as Jesus, “prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered” where we read:

And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

The verse reads, “And, behold, there talked with him two men, ... Luke began with the words, “and behold” or “and look, lo and consider”, “there talked with him” which means “there spoke and talked with Jesus” “two men” or “two males”. Luke shared when Jesus was transfigured, “two men” began to talk with Him who were not His disciples.

The verse goes on to say “... which were Moses and Elias:” Luke continued with the words, “which were Moses” which means “who were Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion” “and Elias” or “and Elijah whose name means my God is Jehovah and was a prophet born at Thisbe, the unflinching champion of the theocracy in the reigns of the idolatrous kings Ahab and Ahaziah. He was taken up to heaven without dying, whence the Jews expected he would return just before the advent of the Messiah, whom he would prepare the minds of the Israelites to receive”. Luke shared how “Moses and Elijah” were the “two men” who spoke with Jesus upon the mountain.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the appearance of these “two men” - “Moses and Elijah” demonstrated the “eternal life” of people who lived on earth. “Moses and Elijah” left the earth well in advance of this appearing of Jesus, and yet, they were on the mountain talking with Him. “Moses” represented the “law of God”, and “Elijah” represented the prophets of God. Jesus said, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (See Matthew 7:12), and “the law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it” (See Luke 16:16). Jesus was to fulfill both the “law and the prophets”, and now “Moses and Elijah” were before Him. God desires people to know Him personally through His Son Jesus who has been the theme and answer for the redemption of man throughout man's fall and separation from Him. Those who are wise will carefully consider and yield to Jesus who was the fulfillment of everything necessary to be the “Messiah” and “Christ” of God.

Next time Luke shares how Moses and Elijah, “spoke of his decease which he should accomplish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
