Lambs Among Wolves - Luke 10:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest”, and in chapter ten and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “I send you forth as lambs among wolves” where we read:

Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

The verse reads, “Go your ways: Luke began with the word, “go or “depart, leave and go forth upon” “your ways” which means “His disciples' paths, travels and journeys”. Luke shared how Jesus dispatched His “seventy” disciples to go into towns and villages to declare God's Kingdom.

The verse goes on to say, “behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.” Luke continued with the word, “behold” which means “look, lo and see”, “I sent you forth” or “I, Jesus, dispatch, assign and dismiss” “as lambs” which means “as sheep which are docile grazing animals” “among wolves” or “with and in the midst of cruel, greedy, rapacious and destructive men”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples He was dispatching them as though they were “docile sheep” who would be in the midst of “vicious and ravenous wolves”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew some of the people His disciples would encounter were “vicious and wicked”. Though they were to approach them with kindness and gentleness, some of the people would “fight against” them and many times treat them badly. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ did not and does not come without a price, and those who become the workers in God's “field” often face great “persecution and tribulation” from the people they are trying to save. Jesus knows there is a “cost” for following Him and doing His “work”, and He promises to reward those who endure suffering and persecution when they share His gospel with the world.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
