Samaritans Not Receiving Jesus - Luke 9:53

Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus, “it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-three of his book Luke shared how the Samaritans, “did not receive him” where we read:

And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

The verse reads, “And they did not receive him, ... Luke began with the words, “and they did not” or “and the people of Samaria would not” “receive him” which means “grant access to, embrace or take Jesus into their area”. Luke shared how the people of Samaria refused to allow Jesus' envoys to go through their “village”.

The verse goes on to say, “... because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.” Luke continued with the words, “because his face” which means “since and on account that Jesus' countenance and look” “was as though he would go” or “was like Jesus would depart, continue on, travel and journey” “to Jerusalem” which means “toward Jerusalem which means set you double peace and was the capital of Palestine”. Luke shared how the people of “Samaria” perceived that Jesus was intending to travel to Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn the reaction of the people of “Samaria” when they understood Jesus and His disciples desired to pass through their “village”. They “rejected” Jesus and His companions, and even though the “Messiah and Christ” of the world was at their doorstep, they refused to let Him in. Many people refuse and reject Jesus today, and even though He “stands at the door and knocks” (See Revelation 3:20), they will not allow Him entrance into their hearts. Those who are wise will not respond to Jesus like these “Samaritans” and rather yield themselves to Jesus Christ who will enter the lives of all who believe and trust in Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples James and John ask Him, “will you that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
