Who Should be the Greatest? - Luke 9:46

The beloved physician Luke wrote how people who saw Jesus rebuke the unclean spirit within a man's son, “were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-six of his book Luke shared how the disciples reasoned, “which of them should be greatest”where we read:

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

The verse reads, “Then there arose a reasoning among them, ... Luke began with the words, “then there arose” or “at that time there came into existence and began to be” “a reasoning among them” which means “a deliberating, questioning about what is true, disputing and arguing with Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples began to “dispute and argue” over the following.

The verse continues, “... which of them should be greatest.” Luke added the words, “which of them” which means “who among Jesus' disciples” “should be greatest” or “exists and happens as the elder, larger and more important”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples were arguing over which one of them was the “greatest” or most important.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples responded to Him saying He “shall be delivered into the hands of men”. Rather than empathize with Jesus, His disciples began to argue over which of them was the “greatest”. Jesus was so patient with His disciples, and when they should have been attending to Him, they were disputing among themselves. God loves everyone, and even when they think only of themselves, He is willing to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how, “Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him” Jesus' disciples, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
