Do Not Rejoice that Spirits are Subject to You - Luke 10:20

The beloved physician Luke shares how Jesus told His disciples, “I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you” where we read:

Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you;

but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

The verse reads, “Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you;” Luke began with the word, “Notwithstanding” or “moreover, besides and nevertheless” “in this rejoice not” which means “Jesus disciples were not to be glad, thrive and joyfully hail”, “that the spirits” or “because, since and on account that the demons, evil spirits and wicked influences” “are subject unto you” which means “are subordinate, in subjection and arranged under Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples not to “be glad and joyful” that “evil spirits” were subordinate to them.

The verse goes on to say, “but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” Luke continued with the words, “but rather rejoice” which means “rather to a greater decree, more willingly and more readily and sooner”, “because your names” or “since and on account that Jesus' disciples' names” “are written” which means “are delineated or formed in letters upon a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “in heaven” or “within the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciple to “be glad and joyful” over the fact that their “names” were “written” down in the “heavenly” realm.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how having your “name written in heaven” is more valuable than having power over “evil spirits”. Since being as “one of God's own” is more important than all works of power, the person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus will have their “name written in heaven”. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to pay the penalty for the sins of the world by dying on the cross. All who yield to Him, regardless of the power and authority they obtain from God, are more blessed by having their “names written in heaven”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
