Martha's Sister Mary - Luke 10:39

The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus how, “it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shared how Martha, “had a sister called Mary” where we read:

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

The verse reads, “And she had a sister called Mary, ...” Luke began with the words, “and she had a sister” or “and Martha had a female sibling” “called Mary” which means “whose name was Mary which means their rebellion”. Luke shared how Martha had a “sister” whose name was “Mary”.

The verse continues, “... which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.” Luke added the words, “which also sat” which means “who even so and indeed was seated, fixed and established” “at Jesus' feet” or “at the physical feet of the Son of God, the Savior of the world and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “and heard his word” which means “and understood, perceived, attended to and comprehended Jesus' speech, concepts and ideas”. Luke shared how “Mary” was “seated” at Jesus' feet listening to and comprehending His ideas.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn that Martha had a “sister named Mary”, who was “seated” at Jesus' feet listening to and understanding His words. God loves people to “hear” His Son Jesus, and because He sent Jesus into the world to “save” people from their “sins”, those who are wise will not only “sit at His feet”, but also “attend to” every word He says.

Next time Luke shares how, “Martha was cumbered about much serving”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
