No Where for Jesus to Lay His Head - Luke 9:58

The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus and His disciples, “ it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow you whithersoever you go”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “the Son of man has not where to lay his head” where we read:

And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests;

but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.

The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; Luke began with the words, “And Jesus said unto him” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to the man”, “foxes have holes” which means “the animals known as foxes possess and own burrows, lurking holes or lairs”, “and birds of the air have nests” or “and the flying and winged animals or birds of the heavens or sky possess encampments, abodes and perches”. Luke shared how Jesus told the man who said He would follow Him anywhere that “foxes” have their homes, and “birds” have their “nesting places”.

The verse continues, “but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.” Luke added the words, “but the Son of man” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover God's Son, Jesus Himself” “has not where” or “does not have, own, hold or possess any place” “to lay his head” which means “to recline or bow His own physical head”. Luke shared how Jesus told the man He did not have a place to “recline” His head.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus did not possess a home where He could recline and rest. In other words, He who owns it all, gave it all so He could save people. Psalm twenty-four and verse one says, The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein”, and there is nothing that He does not own. Jesus knew this man desired to follow Him, however, there is a cost for doing so. Jesus had no place to “lay his head”, and those who submit their lives to Him may find themselves in the same condition as Jesus but will receive everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to another man, “follow me””, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
