Disciples Not Understanding Jesus - Luke 9:45

The beloved physician Luke wrote how people who saw Jesus rebuke the unclean spirit within a man's son, “were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples, “understood not this saying”where we read:

But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not:

and they feared to ask him of that saying.

The verse reads, “But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: Luke began with the words, “But they understood not” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus' disciples did not perceive, discern or discover” “this saying” which means “the utterance, declaration and proclamation of Jesus”, “and it was hid from them” or “and Jesus' words were kept secret and a mystery to His disciples”, “that they perceived it not” which means “so they did not understand, discover or discern what He was saying”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples did not understand what He told them because what He said was kept as a “secret or mystery” from them.

The verse goes on to say, “and they feared to ask him of that saying.” Luke continued with the words, “and they feared to ask him” which means “and Jesus' disciples were afraid to question Him” “of that saying” or “about what He uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples were “afraid” to question Him about what He said to them.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples not only did not understand what He said about being delivered over to men, but the idea of it was kept “secret” from them. They were too afraid to ask Jesus for clarification, so they remained in ignorance about what He said. We now know Jesus suffered affliction, was tortured and endured death because He desired to save people from the penalty of sin. God loves people, and He wants them to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ, and when they yield their lives to Him they will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how, “there arose a reasoning among” Jesus' disciples, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
