Carpernaum Thrust Down to Hell - Luke 10:15

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be you sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you”, and in chapter ten and verse fifteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus speaks about, “Capernaum” being “cast down to hell” where we read:

And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, shall be thrust down to hell.

The verse reads, “And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, ... Luke began with the words, “and you” or “and the people within the city of”, “Capernaum” which means “village of comfort and was a flourishing city of Galilee situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Gennesaret which was near the place where the Jordan flows into the lake”, “which are exalted” or “who are raised and lifted up on high” “to heaven” which means “to the region above the sidereal heavens which is the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the people within the city of “Capernaum”.

The verse goes on to say, “...shall be thrust down to hell.” Luke continues with the words, “shall be thrust down” which means “will be precipitated or brought and cast down” “to hell” or “to the nether world or realm of the dead”. Luke shared how Jesus said the city of “Capernaum” would be “thrown into” the “realm of the dead”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus included how “Capernaum”, which was the city of Jesus' ministry base, would be cast into the “realm of the dead” because they too refused to receive Him as the Messiah. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of everyone. Those who receive Him will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God. Those who do not will be even as the people of “Capernaum” who had a great advantage to observe Jesus' work and still did not believe.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “he that hears you hears me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
