Given to or Taken From - Luke 19:26

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus told a parable concerning a nobleman who gave his servants a pound each to use while he was away. Two of his servants reporting gaining ten and five more pounds sequentially, and the nobleman commended them for their faithfulness. A third servant came to the nobleman, “saying, Lord, behold, here is your pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared you, because you are an austere man: you take up that you laid not down, and reap that you did not sow. And he said unto him, Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Wherefore then gave not you my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that has ten pounds. (And they said unto him, Lord, he has ten pounds.)”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus told how the nobleman said, “unto every one which has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him” where we read:

For I say unto you, That unto every one which has shall be given;

and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him.

The verse reads, “For I say unto you, That unto every one which has shall be given; Luke began with the words, “for I say unto you” or “because, since and on account that I, the nobleman, utter, declare and proclaim to those who were listening to Him”, “that unto every one” which means “that to each, the whole, all and everyone” “which has” or “who holds, owns and possesses” “shall be given” which means “will be granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied”. Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman told those who questioned him that every person who already possessed some will be granted even more.

The verse continues, “and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him.” Luke added the words, “and from him that has not” or “and apart and separated from the person who does not hold, own or possess”, “even that he has” which means “also and indeed that which the person holds, owns or possesses” “shall be taken away from him” or “will be raised up from, elevated and carried away from the person”. Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman added that the person who does not hold and possess things will have “even” what they have carried away.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we may think this is a harsh judgment for the person who had very little from the beginning. This third servant was only given “one pound”, and because he hid it rather than using it or giving it to the bank for interest, it was taken away from him. God desires to give gifts unto people, and when they use those gifts in His Kingdom for His sake and glory, they receive more. Those who do not use their gifts in God's Kingdom and for His glory will find themselves lacking in what they originally possessed. God wants everyone to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will not only provide them with forgiveness, salvation and everlasting life, but He will give them “gifts” to further His Kingdom throughout the world.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how the nobleman says, “those my enemies … bring here, and slay them before me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
