A Cloud by Day and Fire by Night - Psalms 78:14

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said, “Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse fourteen of Psalms Asaph said, “in the daytime ... a cloud, and all the night ... a light of fire” where we read,

In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

The verse begins, In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, ... Asaph began with the words, “in the daytime also” or “within the sunrise to sunset when the sun is shining even so and indeed” “he led them with a cloud” which means “he, Jehovah God, guided, governed and transported them, the people of Israel, by the use of a cloud in the sky”. Asaph said Jehovah God provided a “cloud” in the sky to guide the people of Israel.

The verse goes on to say,... and all the night with a light of fire. Asaph continued with the words, “and all the night” or “and throughout each, every and the whole of the nighttime between sunset and sunrise” “with a light of fire” which means “by the use of a luminous lamp or heavenly illumination”. Asaph referred to how Jehovah God lit up the nighttime with a luminous lamp to lead the children of Israel.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph recalled the time when the people of Israel were traveling within the wilderness after they crossed the Red Sea. God caused a “cloud” to provide shade for them during the daytime, and He made a pillar of fire to guide them in the night. (See Exodus 13:21-22) In other words, God performed a miracle both day and night for the people of Israel. God was with them in the desert where it becomes hot during the day and cold at night. The coolness of the shade of the cloud kept the people of Israel during the day, and the warmth of the pillar of fire kept them warm during the night. God loves people, and His desire is to lead them into a relationship with His Son Jesus. He sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield ourselves to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and send His Holy Spirit to lead and guide us into the “truth” every day and night. (See John 16:13) God will guide us into an eternal relationship with Himself when we surrender to Him, and we shall give Him, praise, honor and glory forever for providing such a wonderful miracle on our behalf.

Next time Asaph says, “He clave the rocks in the wilderness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
