Caterpillars and Locusts - Psalms 78:46

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph reminded the people of Israel when they journey through the wilderness how Jehovah God, “had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink. He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse forty-six of Psalms Asaph said Jehovah God, “gave also their increase unto the caterpillar … and … the locust” where we read,

He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labor unto the locust.

The verse begins, He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, ... Asaph began with the words, “He gave also their increase” or “He, Jehovah God, even so and indeed granted, bestowed and delivered their, the people of Egypt's, produce, crops, fruit and wealth” “unto the caterpillar” which means “to the ravager or caterpillar”. Asaph referred to the way Jehovah God bestowed the crops and fruit of the Egyptians to the “ravagers or caterpillars”.

The verse continues, “... and their labor unto the locust. Asaph added the words, “and their labor” or “and their, the people of Egypt's, toil, product and acquired property” “unto the locust” which means “to the locust swarm”. Asaph recalled the way Jehovah God allowed the swarm of “locusts” to devour the toil and work of the people of Egypt. (See Exodus 10:12-15)

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph continued to recall the plagues Jehovah God poured out upon the people in Egypt. This time God sent “caterpillars and locusts” to devour the vegetation in Egypt, and these insects caused great havoc for the people in Egypt. Israel, however, was preserved from the “caterpillars and locusts”. God worked on behalf of His people Israel, and He desires to bless us and pour out His grace on everyone who yields to His Son Jesus. God sent Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and preserve us from judgments that are meant for those who refuse and reject Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Asaph says Jehovah God, “destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
