God Smiting His Enemies - Psalms 78:66

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph reminded the people of Israel when they journeyed through the wilderness how they “provoked” God, and “the Lord awoke as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouts by reason of wine”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse sixty-six of Psalms Asaph said Jehovah God, “smote his enemies in the hinder parts”, where we read,

And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

The verse begins, And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: Asaph began with the words, “and he smote his enemies” or “and he, Jehovah God, struck, hit, beat, slayed and killed his, Jehovah God's, hating foes and adversaries” “in the hinder parts” which means “within their backside, rear and from behind”. Asaph said Jehovah God routed His “hating foes and adversaries” and sent them in a backward direction.

The verse goes on to say,he put them to a perpetual reproach. Asaph continued with the words, “he put them” or “he, Jehovah God, set, ascribed, employed, devoted and delivered them, His hating foes and adversaries” “to a perpetual reproach” which means “toward a continual, of long duration, everlasting, indefinite and unending future scorn, of shame, disgrace and contumely”. Asaph said Jehovah God delivered His hating foes and adversaries to an indefinite and unending disgrace.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see through Asaph how Jehovah God struck and killed His hating foes, and He delivered them over to scorn and disgrace. In other words, God will contend with His “enemies”. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and He sent His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross and raised from the dead three days later so anyone who believes and trusts in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. God loves us, and He will debase His “enemies”. We have the privilege to honor, bless and praise Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for their provision for us and dealing with His and our hating foes.

Next time Asaph says Jehovah God, “refused the tabernacle of Joseph”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
