Streams Out of the Rock - Psalms 78:16

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said, “Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse sixteen of Psalms Asaph said, “He brought streams also out of the rock” where we read,

He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

The verse begins, He brought streams also out of the rock, ... Asaph began with the words, “He brought streams also” or “He, Jehovah God, even so and indeed caused and delivered flowing waters” “out of the rock” which means “from the craggy stone, cliff or ragged rock”. Asaph said Jehovah God caused flowing waters to come out of a craggy stone.

The verse goes on to say,... and caused waters to run down like rivers. Asaph continued with the words, “and caused waters” or “and made glowing waters of refreshment” “to run down like rivers” which means “to descend and be brought down similar to underground prosperous streams”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God made flowing waters to descend from the “rock” in a manner like unto subterranean streams.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph referred to the times when Jehovah God provided the people of Israel in the “wilderness” with water from a rock. Moses was instructed to “strike” the first rock, (See Exodus 17:6) and He was supposed to speak to the second rock but struck it twice, and Jehovah God provided water but chided Moses (Numbers 20:11) for his anger. God desires to quench the “thirst” of every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and quench our thirst with the provision of His Holy Spirit to lead and refresh us when we become thirsty.

Next time Asaph says, “they sinned yet more against him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
