Hills Covered with the Shadow - Psalms 80:10

In Psalms chapter eighty Asaph said to Jehovah God, “You have brought a vine out of Egypt: you have cast out the heathen, and planted it. You prepared room before it, and did cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land”, and in chapter eighty and verse ten of Psalms Asaph said, “the hills were covered with the shadow of it”, where we read,

The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.

The verse begins, The hills were covered with the shadow of it, ... Asaph began with the words, “the hills were covered with” or “the mountain or range of risings above the plain were concealed, clothed and hidden by” “the shadow of it” which means “the defensive shade of the land”. Asaph said the risings above the plain existed as concealed and clothed by the shade of the land where Israel was located.

The verse continues,... and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars. Asaph added with the words, “and the boughs thereof” or “and the tree branches and limbs within the land” “were like the goodly cedars” which means “were similar to the mighty, powerful and strong cedar trees”. Asaph said the land of Israel was similar to the mighty tree branches of the powerful and strong cedar trees.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph said the land which was given to the people of Israel concealed and covered the range of mountains surrounding it, and the power and might of it was like the strong branches of the mighty cedar trees. In other words, the land of Israel was powerful and strong. God gave Israel this land, and His hand was upon it. He prepared it, preserved it, made it flourish and protected it on behalf of His people. He wants to have this type of relationship with every person, and He gave His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross and raised from the dead three days later so that every person who puts their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given provision for this life and throughout eternity. Let us come to Jehovah God through His Son Jesus and become strong and mighty in our relationship with Him.

Next time Asaph says, “she sent out her boughs unto the sea”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
