Flattering God and Lying - Psalms 78:36

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared when Jehovah God slew the people of Israel in the wilderness, “they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse thirty-six of Psalms Asaph shared how, “they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied” where we read,

Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

The verse begins, “Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, ... Asaph began with the words, “nevertheless they did flatter him” or “notwithstanding, moreover and these things being so they, the people of Israel in the wilderness, enticed, deceived, persuaded and gave lip service to Jehovah God” “with their mouth” which means “by the use of the orifice in their faces used for drinking, eating and speaking”. Asaph said the people of Israel in the wilderness used their mouths to give lip service and attempted to persuade and entice Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “... and they lied unto him with their tongues. Asaph continued with the words, “and they lied unto him” or “and they, the people of Israel in the wilderness, spoke falsehoods, and vanity and attempted to deceive to him, the Divine judge Jehovah God” “with their tongues” which means “by the use of the wedge in the mouth used for speaking that belonged to the people of Israel in the wilderness”. Asaph said the people of Israel who were journeying through the desert wilderness used the “tongues” in their mouths to speak falsehoods to Jehovah God.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see through Asaph how the people of Israel in the wilderness continued to speak in wicked ways toward Jehovah God. Even though they “remembered” Him, they continued to say false and vain things to Him. Jesus said, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (See Matthew 12:34), and what is truly inside us comes out through our speaking. God wants us to be truthful with Him, and He has given us His truth through His Son Jesus. (See John 14:6). When we submit to Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to use our “mouths and tongues” to bless Him and others. Let us use our voices to lift up praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God, and may He keep our lips from speaking flattering words and lies to Him.

Next time Asaph shares how, “their heart was not right with him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
