In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing”, and in chapter five and verse one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “there was a great cry of the people”, where we read,
And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
The verse reads, “And there was a great cry of the people ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and there was a great cry” or “and there existed an abundant, intense and loud distressful shriek” “of the people” which means “from the male human beings”. Nehemiah shared how there was a loud distressful shriek among the people of Judah.
The verse goes on to say, “... and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “and of their wives” or “and belonging to their, the men of Judah's, female spouses” “against their brethren” which means “in opposition to their, the people of Judah's, kindred, kinship and relatives” “the Jews” or “the Jehudites or Judaites who were descendants of Judah”. Nehemiah shared how the female spouses were also shouting loudly in opposition to their Jewish relatives.
When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how some of the men of Judah and their female spouses let out a distressful shriek in opposition to their Jewish kinship. We shall discover why in our next verse, but for now, let us imagine the mental and physical torment they must have experienced to let out such a voracious cry. God knows everything we experience in this life, and sometimes difficulties arise even from those closest to us. God Himself is aware of this pain as He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross and be resurrected from the dead three days later so everyone who believes and trusts in Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life as He is available to hear our distressful “cries” in times of anguish upon the earth.
Next time Nehemiah some of the people said, “we, our sons, and our daughters, are many”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
