The Children of Zaccai - Nehemiah 7:14

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this. The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two. The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two. The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand and eight hundred and eighteen. The children of Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four. The children of Zattu, eight hundred forty and five”and in chapter seven and verse fourteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Zaccai”, where we read,

The children of Zaccai, seven hundred and threescore.

The verse reads, The children of Zaccai, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “to offspring and progeny” “of Zaccai” which means “belonging to Zaccai whose name means pure”. Nehemiah shared how “Zaccai's”offspring were enumerated as those among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “... seven hundred and threescore.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “seven hundred” or “seven hundred offspring plus” “threescore” which means “sixty more”. Nehemiah said there were seven hundred and sixty members of the family of “Zaccai” who continued in Jerusalem unto the completion of the barrier wall.

When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how he is completing the record of the genealogy of the people who remained in Jerusalem and Judah during the time of the rebuilding of the barrier wall. This time “Zaccai”is mentioned along with his “seven hundred and sixty” offspring. These are among the faithful ones who continued in the work of the Lord, and God wants us to be a part of His list of faithful ones as well. When we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave three days later as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire and ability through His Holy Spirit to remain pure and faithful to Him and His ways throughout eternity.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Binnui”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
