In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. Among many people he employed was, “Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib. And after him repaired the priests, the men of the plain. After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house. After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another piece, from the house of Azariah unto the turning of the wall, even unto the corner. Palal the son of Uzai, over against the turning of the wall, and the tower which lies out from the king's high house, that was by the court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh. Moreover the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that lies out. After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lies out, even unto the wall of Ophel”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “from above the horse gate repaired the priests”, where we read,
From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.
The verse reads, “From above the horse gate repaired the priests, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “from above the horse gate” or “apart from the section over the entrance, portal or opening named after the swallow, swift or chariot horses” “repaired the priests” which means “strengthened, hardened and made firm the spiritual leaders and spokesmen”. Nehemiah shared how the spiritual leaders strengthened the section of the “portal” named after “horses”.
The verse goes on to say, “... every one over against his house.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “every one” or “each, all, the whole and everyone of the priests” “over against his house” which means “ across from his, the priests', dwelling places, habitations and abodes”. Nehemiah shared how the spiritual leaders rebuilt the wall across from their dwelling places.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah how the spiritual leaders also got involved with the rebuilding of the barrier wall surrounding Jerusalem. They worked from the portal named for the “horses” in Jerusalem, and all of them repaired the places across from their homes. God was using everyone in Jerusalem who made themselves available to rebuild the protective barrier, and God offers His Salvation, forgiveness of sins and eternal life to everyone who will yield to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead three days later. God loves us and wants us in His Kingdom, and those who are wise surrender their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Nehemiah says, “after them repaired Zadok”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
