The Children of Bigvai - Nehemiah 7:19

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad and Adonikam”and in chapter seven and verse nineteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Bigvai”, where we read,

The children of Bigvai, two thousand threescore and seven.

The verse reads, The children of Bigvai, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Bigvai” which means “belonging to Bigvai whose name means in my bodies”. Nehemiah shared how the progeny belonging to “Bigvai” were also among the people of Israel whom he counted as living in Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... two thousand threescore and seven” Nehemiah added the words, “two thousand” or “two thousand progeny plus” “threescore and seven” which means “sixty seven more”. Nehemiah said there were two thousand and sixty seven offspring of “Bigvai” who returned to Jerusalem and continued there to the completion of the barrier wall.

When we meditate upon Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover another family, “Bigvai's”, who obeyed the commission of Jehovah God to returned to Jerusalem and continue there to the completing of the barrier wall. These two thousand and sixty seven offspring were counted by Nehemiah, and they were important enough that God had him number them. God loves everyone, and because we have sin in our lives which separates us from Him, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins and be raised from the dead three days later. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and include us in His family who shall live with Him in Heaven for all eternity.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Adin”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
