The Children of Hashum - Nehemiah 7:22

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad, Adin, Adonikam, Bigvai, Adin and Ater of Hezekiah”and in chapter seven and verse twenty-two of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Hashum”, where we read,

The children of Hashum, three hundred twenty and eight.

The verse reads, The children of Hashum, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Hashum” which means “belonging to Hashum whose name means rich”. Nehemiah shared how the offspring of “Hashum” were included in his census from the people who returned and remained in Jerusalem to the rebuilding of the barrier wall.

The verse continues, “... three hundred twenty and eight.” Nehemiah added the words, “three hundred” or “three hundred offspring plus” “twenty and eight” which means “twenty-eight more”. Nehemiah said there were three hundred and twenty eight offspring of “Hashum” who were counted by him within the city of Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that three hundred and twenty-eight offspring of “Hashum” were enumerated by him as those who were among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem to the rebuilding of the wall surrounding the city. God's plan for accounting for everyone was coming together, and He wants to have everyone receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross and was raised from the dead three days for the sins of the world. God loves us, and when we yield to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into the truth and provide the ability to live with Him in that truth for all eternity.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Bezai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
