Benjamin and Hashub Repairing - Nehemiah 3:23

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. Among many people he employed was, Nehemiah” himself who was “the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Bethzur, unto the place over against the sepulchers of David, and to the pool that was made, and unto the house of the mighty. After him repaired the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani. Next unto him repaired Hashabiah, the ruler of the half part of Keilah, in his part. After him repaired their brethren, Bavai the son of Henadad, the ruler of the half part of Keilah. And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall. After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. After him repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib. And after him repaired the priests, the men of the plain”and in chapter three and verse twenty-three of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “after him repaired Benjamin and Hashub”, where we read,

After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house.

After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house.

The verse reads, After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. Nehemiah began with the words, “and after him repaired Benjamin” or “following him, Meremoth, strengthened, hardened and made firm Benjamin whose name means son of the right hand” “and Hashub” whose name means “considerate” “over against their house” or “across from their, Benjamin and Hashub's, habitation, abode or dwelling place”. Nehemiah shared how “Benjamin and Hashub” worked on the section of the barrier wall which was across from their dwelling place.

The verse continues, After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house.” Nehemiah added the words, “after him repaired Azariah” or “following him, Hashub, strengthened, hardened and made firm Azariah whose name means Jehovah has helped” “the son of Maaseiah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Maaseiah whose name means work of Jehovah” “the son of Ananiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Ananiah whose name means Jehovah clouds” “by his house” which means “beside his, Azariah's, dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Nehemiah shared how “Azariah” repaired the wall beside his dwelling place.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how “Azariah” also worked on the barrier wall beside his home, and as each of these men put together their portion of the wall, all the wall was coming together. God allows us to be a part of His work when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead three days later. When we put our faith and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to work in His Kingdom while beginning at the location that is nearest to our homes.

Next time Nehemiah says, “after him repaired Binnui”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
