The Children of Adin - Nehemiah 7:20

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad, Adonikam and Bigvai”and in chapter seven and verse twenty of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Adin”, where we read,

The children of Adin, six hundred fifty and five.

The verse reads, The children of Adin, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Adin” which means “belonging to Adin whose name means “dainty or delicate”. Nehemiah shared how “Adin” or “delicate” had offspring who were among the people of Jerusalem that he counted.

The verse continues, “... six hundred fifty and five.” Nehemiah added the words, “six hundred” or “six hundred offspring plus” “fifty and five” which means “fifty five more”. Nehemiah shared how there were six hundred and fifty five offspring belonging to “Adin” who returned to Jerusalem and were accounted for by him.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah how “Adin” had six hundred and fifty five offspring who were enumerated by him. Each family, one by one, Nehemiah counted because each person was important to God. God loves all people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross and raised from the dead for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to include us in the family of God.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Ater of Hezekiah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
