Meremoth Repairing - Nehemiah 3:21

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. Among many people he employed was, Nehemiah” himself who was “the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Bethzur, unto the place over against the sepulchres of David, and to the pool that was made, and unto the house of the mighty. After him repaired the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani. Next unto him repaired Hashabiah, the ruler of the half part of Keilah, in his part. After him repaired their brethren, Bavai the son of Henadad, the ruler of the half part of Keilah. And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall. After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest”and in chapter three and verse twenty-one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said,“after him repaired Meremoth”, where we read,

After him repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece,

from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.

The verse reads, After him repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece, ... Nehemiah began with the words, “after him repaired Meremoth” or “following him, Baruch, strengthened, hardened and made firm Meremoth whose name means elevations” “the son of Urijah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Urijah whose name means Jehovah (Yahweh) is my light (flame)” “the son of Koz” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Koz whose name means thorn” “another piece” which means “one other section or portion”. Nehemiah shared how “Meremoth” rebuilt another portion of the barrier wall surrounding Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.” Nehemiah added the words, “from the door” or “apart from the place of the gate, portal or opening” “of the house” which means “ pertaining to the habitation, abode or dwelling place” “of Eliashib” or “belonging to Eliashib whose name means God restores” “even to the end of the house” which means “up until and as far as the extremity pertaining to the habitation, abode or dwelling place” “of Eliashib” or “belonging to Eliashib whose name means God restores”. Nehemiah said “Meremoth” repaired the wall up from the opening to Eliashib's dwelling place to the extremity of the same.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how “Meremoth” worked beside “Baruch” to complete a section of the wall that was from the “door” or gate of “Eliashib's” home unto the extremity of it. When we use our imaginations, we can see and hear the steady work of all the people who were involved in rebuilding the barrier wall surrounding Jerusalem, and every portion was important as everyone worked on their section. God wants us to be involved in His Kingdom work, and the first step is for us to receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross and was resurrected from the dead as our personal “Savior and Lord”. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion, drive and wisdom to complete the task that He has for us in sharing His gospel around the world.

Next time Nehemiah says, “after him repaired the priests”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
