The Children of the Province - Nehemiah 7:6

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein, ...”and in chapter seven and verse six of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “these are the children of the province”, where we read,

These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;

The verse reads, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “these are the children” or “the following exist as the offspring and progeny” “of the province” which means “belonging to the district and region”, “that went up out of the captivity” or “who ascended, sprung forth and departed from being captives and prisoners”, “of those that had been carried away” which means “belonging to the ones who were removed from Jerusalem and held in exile in Babylon”. Nehemiah referred to the offspring of the Jerusalem region who arose from being captives within Babylon and the people who were captured and held in exile.

The verse goes on to say, “... whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;” Nehemiah continued with the words, “whom Nebuchadnezzar” or “the ones which Nebuchadnezzar whose name means may Nebo protect the crown” “the king of Babylon” which means “the royal ruler and leader belonging to Babylon whose name means confusion (by mixing) and was the ancient site and or capital of Babyloniah (modern Hillah) situated on the Euphrates River” “had carried away” or “removed”, “and came again to Jerusalem” which means “and returned to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split” “and to Judah” or “and to Judah whose name means praised and was the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”, “every one unto his city” which means “each, all, the whole and everybody to his, the person's, own place of waking, encampment or town”. Nehemiah referred to the people that “King Nebuchadnezzar” of “Babylon” previously removed but now had returned to “Jerusalem and Judah”to their own dwelling places.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Nehemiah began to account for all the people of Israel who went back to Jerusalem and Judah after being exiled in Babylon for seventy years. King Nebuchadnezzar removed these Jewish people, and now they were back in their own region and town. Nehemiah was going to make a record of each of their “genealogies”, and an accounting for each one was not only important, but was also conducted in obedience to God. God knows and loves us, and His desire is to have a personal intimate relationship with all of us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross and be raised from the dead three days later for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to follow the leading of His Holy Spirit wherever and whenever He guides us and wants us to be.

Next time Nehemiah shares about those who, “came with Zerubbabel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
