The Children of Adonikam - Nehemiah 7:18

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai and Azgad”and in chapter seven and verse eighteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Adonikam”, where we read,

The children of Adonikam, six hundred threescore and seven.

The verse reads, The children of Adonikam, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Adonikam” which means “belonging to Adonikam whose name means my lord arose”. Nehemiah shared how the offspring of “Adonikam” were among the people he counted in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “... six hundred threescore and seven.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “six hundred” or “six hundred offspring plus” “threescore and seven” which means “sixty seven”. Nehemiah said there were six hundred and sixty seven offspring who belonged to “Adonikam” who returned and remained in Jerusalem to the time of the completion of the barrier wall.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how the family of “Adonikam” which included six hundred and sixty seven offspring were numbered among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem and continued there to the completion of the barrier wall. Each of these people were important to Jehovah God, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross and rose from the grave three days later, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and brought into the family of God with whom we shall live in Heaven forever.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Bigvai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
