The Builders with Swords - Nehemiah 4:18

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work. And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon”and in chapter four and verse eighteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the builders, every one had his sword”, where we read,

For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded.

And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

The verse reads, For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. Nehemiah began with the words, “for the builders” or “because, since and on account that the rebuilders and establishers of the barrier wall”, “every one had his sword” which means “each, all, the whole and everyone of the builders possessed a knife, cutting instrument, axe, dagger or mattock” “girded by his side” or “tied and fastened to the side of his, the workers', body”,“and so builded” which means “and thus and therein rebuilt, reestablished and repaired”. Nehemiah shared shared how the people who were rebuilding the barrier wall had a “sharp weapon” strapped to the side of their bodies.

The verse goes on to say, And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “and he that sounded the trumpet” or “and he, the person from Judah, who gave a blow, blast and driving thrust to the ram's horn which was a curved instrument” “was by me” which means “was beside me, Nehemiah”. Nehemiah shared how the person who blew the ram's horn was next to him.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah shared how the people who rebuilt the wall surrounding Jerusalem kept a “sword” attached to the “side” of their body and was able to keep rebuilding, and the person who blew the ram's horn for battle sounds was next to him. Each person in Jerusalem had a responsibility even as anyone who surrenders their life to God's Son Jesus who died on the cross and was resurrected from the dead three days later will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given a task to perform in His Kingdom.

Next time Nehemiah speaks to, “the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
