The Children of Zattu - Nehemiah 7:13

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this. The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two. The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two. The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand and eight hundred and eighteen. The children of Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four”and in chapter seven and verse thirteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Zattu”, where we read,

The children of Zattu, eight hundred forty and five.

The verse reads, The children of Zattu, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the progeny and offspring” “of Zattu” which means “belonging to Zattu whose name means brightness of him”. Nehemiah shared how“Zattu” had offspring who returned to Jerusalem and were counted.

The verse goes on to say, “... eight hundred forty and five.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “eight hundred” or “eight hundred offspring plus” “forty and five” which means “forty five more”. Nehemiah said there were “eight hundred and forty five” offspring of “Zattu” who were among the people of Jerusalem that he counted.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about another family of people, “Zattu's”offspring, who returned to Jerusalem and Judah and were counted among those who remained for the rebuilding of the barrier wall. God knew all of these people, and this larger family was specially accounted for by Him. God loves people, and He desires a family which includes all of us. When He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead three days later, He provided the way through faith and trust in Jesus for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and brought into His huge family where we will all live with Him in Heaven together some day.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Zaccai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
