Paul
the apostle asked the Jews in Rome,
“For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief
make the faith of God without effect?”,
and he added, “God
forbid: yes, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written,
that you might be justified in your sayings, and might overcome when
you are judged.” In chapter
three and verse five of Romans, Paul asked, “if our
unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall I say?”
where we read:
But
if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God,
what
shall we say? Is
God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
The
verse begins, “But if our unrighteousness commend the
righteousness of God, ...”
Paul began with the word, “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “if
our unrighteousness” or
“whether some people's injustice or deed violating law and justice”
“commend” which
means “place together, set in the same place, bring or band
together, combine, compare, show, prove, establish and exhibit”
“the righteousness”
or “the integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness
of thinking feeling and acting” “of God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Paul shared
how some might think their “injustice” “shows and proves”
God's “righteous” ways.
The
verse continues, “...
what shall we say? Is
God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man)” Paul
added the words, “what
shall we say” which
means “what will Paul and his companions utter, declare or
proclaim”? “Is
God”
which refers to “is the Godhead bodily and trinity which is
comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”
“unrighteous”
or “unjust or practicing deeds violating law and justice”
“who takes vengeance” or
“who pays anger, temper and character against them”? “(I
speak”
which means “Paul utters, proclaims and declares” “as
a man”
or “as a human being whether male or female”) . These who thought
their “unrighteousness” actually “proved” God's righteousness
and wondered why it would be “fair” or “right” for God to
judge them for their help.
When
we meditate upon these words of Paul, we see how twisted the thinking
was of some people. They actually thought their “unrighteous”
ways only helped to show how “righteous” God is, and that
He should not “judge” them for their aid. Jesus Christ
came to save people who are of such a mindset, and even though they
think themselves “right” or “okay” for having such thoughts,
they are “unrighteous” and “violating” God's way.
Belief and trust in Jesus is the only way to have the “righteousness”
of God appropriated to one's life, and those who are wise shall not
only acknowledge the same, but shall also yield their lives to Jesus
as “Savior and Lord”.
Next
time Paul asked the people in Rome,
“how
shall God judge the world?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
