Paul
the apostle shared with the people in Rome how,
“the
law entered, that the offense might abound.
But
where sin abounded, grace did much more abound”,
and he added, “That
as sin has reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through
righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
In
chapter
six and verse one of Romans, Paul questioned, “shall
we continue in sin, that grace may abound?”
where
we read:
What shall we say
then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
The
verse begins, “What
shall we say then?”
Paul
began with the words, “what”
which means “whither and to what manner” “shall
we say”
which means “will Paul, his companions and his believing readers
utter, speak, proclaim and declare” “then”
which means “therefore, accordingly, consequently and these things
being so”. Paul questioned “what”
could they “speak and declare” concerning the
“grace”
that was provided through Jesus Christ.
The
verse continues, “Shall
we continue in sin, that grace may abound?”
Paul
continued with the words, “shall
we continue”
or “Should Paul, his companions and his believing readers stay at,
with, abide and remain” “in
sin” which
means “within missing the mark, error and mistakes”, “that
grace” or
“so that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm,
loveliness and unmerited favor” “may
abound”
or “might super-abound, increase be more abundant”. Paul desired
to know if his readers thought they should “remain” in their
“violations” of “God's
law”
just so God's “unmerited favor” would “super-abound”.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we see how he proposed a
rhetorical question that was an extreme idea concerning “remaining”
in “sinful ways”. Because “God's grace” “super-abounds”
any “violation” of “God's law”, some might think they
are doing God a “favor” to continue in their “sin”.
Paul has more to say about these things as Jesus Christ came not only
to bring forth “God's grace”, but also to “purify” and
“cleanse” those who “believe and trust” in Him. May all who
read these words know that Jesus came not only for their “salvation”
but also their “purification” from all their “errors and
wrongs”.
Next
time Paul asks the people in Rome,
“How
shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
