Paul
the apostle shared with the people in Rome,
“we
are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was
raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life”,
and he added,
“for if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
we
shall be also in
the likeness
of his
resurrection”.
In
chapter six and verse six of Romans, Paul shared how,
“our old man is crucified with”
Jesus where
we read:
Knowing
this, that our old man is crucified with him,
that the body of sin might be destroyed,
that
henceforth we should not serve sin.
The
verse begins, “
Knowing
this, that our old man is crucified with him,
...” Paul
began with the words, “knowing
this”
which means “understanding, perceiving and having knowledge”
“that
our old man”
which means “that Paul, his companions and his readers ancient,
worn and worse for wear self” “is
crucified”
or “impaled” “with
him”
which means “with Jesus” . Paul shared how the “former life”
of those who believe in Jesus has been “put to death by way of the
cross” with Jesus' crucifixion.
The
verse continues, “...
that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should
not serve sin.”
Paul
added the words, “that
the body”
which means “so the corpse or flesh” “of
sin”
or “of missing the mark, erring and being mistaken” “might
be destroyed”
which refers to “may be rendered idle, unemployed, inactive and
inoperative”, “that
henceforth”
which means “so from this point and time on” “we
should not serve”
or “Paul, his companions and his believing readers would not be
slaves to or do service toward” “sin”
which
means “missing the mark, error and being mistaken. Paul shared the
purpose of our “old
man”
being “crucified”
was so our “sinful flesh” should not be the “servants
of sin”
any longer.
When
we meditate upon these words of Paul, we see the huge benefit to
being “crucified with Christ”. We no longer live the life
of “sin”, but live after the ways of Jesus. Since our “old
man” has been put to “death”, we should not be
“serving” “sin”, and through Jesus' help and power, we
no longer are “sin's slave”. Let all praise and glory be
unto Jesus Christ who not only provided a means for our “old
man” to be dead, but also gave us a way to life life anew.
Next
time Paul tells the people in Rome,
“he that is dead is freed from sin”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
