Mark wrote, “And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-five of his book, Mark shares how Jesus shared about, “what David did, when he had need, and was hungry” where we read:
And he said unto them, Have you never read what David did,
when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him?
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Have you never read what David did, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed to and questioned the Pharisees”, “have you never read” which means “have the scribes and Pharisees not even at any time and never at all distinguished between, recognized, known accurately and acknowledged” “what David did” or “that which King David of Israel performed, prepared, made ready and produced”. Mark shared how Jesus questioned whether the “religious leaders” ever “recognized” what “King David” did in the scriptures.
The verse goes on to say, “... when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him?” Mark added the words, “when he had need” which means “at the time and moment David had occasion and demand”, “and was hungry” which means “and was craving food ardently” “he” which refers to “David”, “and they that were with him” which means “and the men who were with David”? Mark shared how Jesus referred to the time when “King David” and the men with Him were “hungry”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to First Samuel chapter twenty one where “David” and his men came to “the city of Nob” where Ahimelech the priest” was located. They were without food, and the only food available was the “hallowed bread” which “Ahimelech” gave to them. Jesus is continuing to challenge the “religious leaders” who were questioning Jesus' disciples' behavior, and when He concludes His illustration, He will demonstrate once again God's desire to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. God loves people, and He enjoys caring for them. Let all who read these words understand the love of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ who desires to lovingly care for them.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus said David, “did eat the showbread”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
