Mark wrote how Jesus, “entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand”, and in chapter three and verse two of his book, Mark shares how the Pharisees and scribes, “watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day” where we read:
And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
The verse reads, “And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day;” Mark began with the words, “and they watched him” or “and the Pharisees observed, viewed and attended to Jesus with their eyes”, “whether he would heal him” which means “if by chance and happenstance Jesus would cure and restore the man with the withered hand” “on the sabbath day” or “on the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” observed Jesus to see if He would “cure” the man with the “withered hand” on the “sacred” rest day.
The verse continues, “that they might accuse him.” Mark added the words, “that they” which means “so the Pharisees” “might accuse him” which means “could judge and make an accusation against Jesus”. Mark shared how the Pharisees were observing Jesus so they could “judge and make an accusation” against Him.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “religious leaders” knew Jesus would give attention to the “man with the withered hand”, and they assumed that He had the power to “cure” Him. Their interest was to whether Jesus would “heal” the man on “the sabbath day”, and once again we see how they were more interested in keeping the “sabbath day” law they observed rather than the man being “healed”. God loves people, and His laws are all for the “good” of man and not harm. When people violate His law, they hurt themselves, and for this reason He came to “save” them and give them “everlasting life”. Let all who consider Jesus submit their lives to Him today.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus instructed the man with the withered hand to, “stand forth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
