Mark wrote how Jesus, “went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him”, and in chapter three and verse fourteen of his book, Mark shares how Jesus, “ordained twelve, that they should be with him” where we read:
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
The verse reads, “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him,” Mark began with the words, “and he ordained twelve” or “and Jesus prepared, rendered, constituted and appointed twelve of the men He selected”, “that they” which means “that the men Jesus selected” “should be with him” which means “might appear alongside and joined to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus “constituted and appointed” twelve of the men He “called” to be “joined to and journey alongside” of Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... and that he might send them forth to preach.” Mark continued with the words, “and that he might send them forth” which means “and that Jesus could appoint, dismiss and allow these men to depart” “to preach” or “to herald, publish and proclaim openly”. Mark shared how the purpose for Jesus “ordaining” these twelve men is so they could be “appointed” to “herald” and proclaim His message.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus drew these “twelve men” near Him so they might “carry on” the message of His “gospel” or “good news” of the Kingdom of God. The Messiah was among them, and there would be a time when Jesus would not be with His “disciples”. They would need to know how to “proclaim” the “gospel” and the power of God to change people's lives. God loves people, and when He sent His Son Jesus to “die for theirs sins”, “raised Him from the dead” and now “sits at the right hand of God”, it was all because He wanted them to know Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. May all who consider these “twelve men's” commission to be the beginning of many that Jesus calls His own.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus gave His disciples, “power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
