Mark wrote how, “the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea, And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him”, and in chapter three and verse ten of his book, Mark shares how Jesus, “healed many” people who “touched him” where we read:
For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him,
as many as had plagues.
The verse reads, “For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, ...” Mark began with the words, “for he had healed many” or “because Jesus cured and restored a lot of and a great number of people”; “insomuch that” which means “so that, therefore and wherefore” “they pressed upon him” which means “the multitude of people pushed to embrace Jesus” “for to touch him” or “because, since and on account that they wanted just to adhere and cling themselves to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus “cured” so many people that others began to “push in toward Him” just so they could “touch” Him in some manner.
The verse goes on to say, “... as many as had plagues.” Mark added the words, “as many as” which means “whoever and however many” “had plagues” or “were diseased or experienced calamity and misfortune”. Mark shared how people who were “diseased and troubled with misfortune” desired just to “touch” Jesus to be relieved.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' popularity increased because He was able to “cure and restore” people's health. Those who were troubled with “plagues, diseases, calamities and such” were attempting in any way possible to simply touch Him, cling to Him or get near Him to be healed. God exhibited His power though His Son Jesus, and because He was the Messiah sent from God, Jesus healed and ministered to many. Those who examine Jesus' life shall see how impactful He was among those who came to Him, and wise people shall not only come but also receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” sent from God.
Next time Mark shares how “unclean spirits” said to Jesus, “you are the Son of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
