Mark wrote how Jesus, “spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues. And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, You are the Son of God. And he straightly charged them that they should not make him known”, and in chapter three and verse thirteen of his book, Mark shares how Jesus, “went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would” where we read:
And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
The verse reads, “And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would:” Mark began with the words, “and he went up” or “and Jesus ascended” “into a mountain” which means “to a rising above the plain”, “and called unto him” or “and summoned, invited and bid to Himself” “whom he would” which means “whoever Jesus desired, intended, took delight in, was fond of and had pleasure in”. Mark shared how Jesus “ascended” into a “mountain” and “invited” whomever He decided should be with Him.
The verse continues, “and they came unto him.” Mark added the words, “and they” which means “and those whom Jesus selected” “came unto him” or “approached and came forth to Jesus”. Mark shared how the ones Jesus “desired and invited” responded by approaching Jesus.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was selective in those in whom He would call. We shall learn their names in the next few verses, but let it suffice for now to know that Jesus invites people to come alongside Him in relationship and ministry. God loves people, and His desire is for every person to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who yield their lives to Him shall not only be used in His Kingdom, but shall enjoy fellowship and union with God for all eternity. Oh, what an invitation this is!
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “ordained twelve, that they should be with him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
