Mark wrote about Jesus, “And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the showbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-eight of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said, “the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath”where we read:
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
The verse reads, “Therefore the Son of man ...” Mark began with the word, “therefore” or “then, insomuch and wherefore”, “the Son of man” which means “God's Son Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus concluded that God's Son, Himself, was the following.
The verse continues, “... is Lord also of the sabbath.” Mark added the words, “is Lord also” which means “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “of the sabbath” which means “pertaining to the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. Mark shared how He was indeed the “master” of the “sabbath day”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus declared the real purpose of the “sabbath day”. Rather than “man” being created for the “sabbath”, the “sabbath” was made for “man”. God loves people, and He knew they needed rest, and because there was a law concerning the “sabbath”, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (See Exodus 20:8) However, when man steps in and adds to the “law of God”, rules like these Pharisees made disregard the original intent of God. God loves people, and He rules over all His “laws”. His desire is to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who yield their lives to Him shall know personally “the Lord of the sabbath”.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Jesus encounter, “a man there which had a withered hand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
